For years, the focus has been on personal jewelry, delicate rings that complement rather than outshine other bijou. But what ever happened to the unabashed look-at-me pieces? Those dazzling stones buried deep in the safety-deposit box, considered too flashy for wear? If newlywed Angelina Jolie is anything to go by, then it could be time to dust off your Dynasty-era baubles. “A woman wants something unique, something that’s special to her,” says designer Robert Procop who worked with Brad Pitt on Jolie’s impressive 16-carat engagement ring. In that sense the new look of opulence lies in truly rarified rocks—from the allure of an pear-shaped diamond from Asprey, to the uncanny hue of Kwiat’s blue-tinged diamond. And designers are rethinking traditional settings to incorporate unusual, lustrous gems. Those with an artistic side will appreciate the surrealist influences of Chopard and de Grisogono, for example, while FD Gallery, Sotheby’s Diamonds, and Van Cleef & Arpels designs will appeal to brides with a penchant for deco. As engagement season approaches, one message rings loud and clear: Go big, or go home.
